Mysore, July 18 (KK&SH)- Doubts have arisen about the fate of ornaments worth crores of rupees gifted by Wadiyars to Sri Chamundeshwari temple atop the hill here. Most people strongly believe that the ornaments made of gold, silver and diamond are safe in the treasury.
However, the questions are, are these ornaments same as the ones gifted by former rulers and are they original? These questions have been posed by Dr. P.V. Nanjaraja Urs, city's renowned historian.
All the Kings of Mysore starting from Raja Wadiyar centuries ago upto Jayachamaraja Wadiyar, the last ruler of the princely State of Mysore, have gifted ornaments to the shrine of Sri Chamundeshwari, he was quoted saying.
The necklace made of emerald and pearls, gifted by Jayachamaraja Wadiyar, was worth a huge amount which could purchase the entire city of Mysore. Is that valuable ornament still in place? If it is there, is it the original piece? There is no information about the ornament in the temple treasury, asserts Dr. Urs.
He has urged for the valuation of all ornaments gifted by the former rulers of Mysore and their documentation. It may be recalled that the Department of Muzrai has already started valuation and documentation of temple assets in the State.
