A two-judge Division Bench of the Supreme Court comprising Justices H.L.Gokul and Madan Koirala today dismissed the appeal filed by Karnataka Government seeking extension of time to hold elections to Urban Local Bodies (ULB) including Mysore City Corporation and ordered that the elections should be held before the end of February 2013.
Dismissing the Special Leave Petition filed by the Karnataka Government challenging the High Court judgment which had ordered holding of elections to these bodies before Jan. 31, the Bench directed the Government to provide list of reservation to the EC before Feb. 3. The Bench also said that the elections should be held as per old reservation list and based on the 2001 census.
It may be recalled that Karnataka State JD(S) Minority Cell Vice-President Ayub Khan, through his advocate had filed a caveat at the apex court regarding the issue.
A battery of seven lawyers representing the State drew the flak of the Bench when they tried to present different documents and the Bench charged them saying that "You lack basic knowledge that no document can be presented to a court at the time of judgment."
