Mysore, Nov. 6 (KCU&KK)- District In-Charge Minister S.A. Ramdas inaugurated the Children's Gift Bank at the premises of Deputy Commissioner's office here this morning. To mark the occasion, crackers and sweets were distributed to about 500 poor, mentally challenged and slum children, today being Deepavali.

Addressing press persons later, Ramdas said instead of spending money on garlands and gifts for elected representatives at public functions the same could be utilised to purchase books, school uniforms and such items for children and deposited at the gift bank. It can also be directly given in the form of cheques and DDs. A request has been placed before entrepreneurs and private sector industries to co-operate in the noble mission.

The services of NGOs too will be utilised. A Toy Bank too will be opened soon to cater to pre-LKG and Anganawadi children in rural areas. The newly-opened Gift Bank will be under the care of the DC right now till further arrangements are made, he said.

Deputy Commissioner Harsha Gupta, Corporation Commissioner K.S. Raikar, MUDA Commissioner P.C. Jayanna, Corporation Superintending Engineer Mahesh and JNNURM Superintending Engineer Suresh Babu were present.
