Officials deployed at various places on election duty were in for a shock as some places were devoid of basic facilities.
The Election Commission, which had made all arrangements for conducting elections, neglected to provide facilities to the polling officials this time.
Poll officials who arrived at the respective polling stations on Saturday were shocked as no basic facilities were provided for them. The officials who had thought the Election Commission would have arranged for food and water, were disappointed after coming to know that no such arrangement was being done. In most of the government and private schools which were equipped as polling booths, the election officials had to sleep on the floor as floor mats were not provided. This apart, in some of the schools, there was no electricity as there was a power cut.
The officials who were starving without food had to go in search of small hotels and shops for food. While some managed to get food in hotels, the rest had to manage with snacks.
Earlier, the officials faced no such problems as they were looked after by the candidates. Since, the EC had assured to provide food and other basic facilities, the candidates did not intervene and feared the code of conduct.
