The Devaraj Urs Truck Terminal constructed by the State Government spending crores of rupees at the Ring Road junction in Bandipalya on Nanjangud Road is lying idle still.
About 80% of the lorry drivers are said to park their vehicles by the roadside in Bandipalya to avoid paying a parking fee of Re. 1 per hour if parked inside the truck terminal. Hence hundreds of lorries are seen parked on the road and hardly a few inside the terminal.
This has resulted in congestion on already congested Nanjangud Road.
The terminal has all the facilities like rest room, canteen, toilets and agent’s office along with good Police security to facilitate lorry drivers to have a break during their long journeys but the purpose of constructing the terminal has been defeated now with the lorries continuously parking by the roadside inconveniencing the traffic movement.
However the Truck Terminal General Manager Vasudeva Rao contended that it was not possible to force the lorry drives to park their vehicles inside the terminal which should be done by the Traffic Police. He added that the City Police Commissioner and RTO have been apprised about the issue. He suggested a joint operation to levy a fine for parking the lorries outside the terminal.
