A politician of the city, accused of cheating some people by promising them government jobs, was arrested by the Police yesterday.

The accused is G. Ravi, a resident of Bogadi 2nd Stage. He is said to have gone to Belgaum where he would identify unemployed persons and lure them with offers of government jobs. He would then collect money from them and give them fake appointment letter, before fleeing from the area.

He is also said to have issued bank cheques to some persons who demanded their money back and threatened to expose his conning racket.

He is said to have cheated several people in Savadatti town of Belgaum district and some have lodged Police complaints against him, it is learnt.

According to the Police, one Manjunath, who acted as an agent of Ravi, had collected about Rs. 47 lakh from job-seekers in Savadatti alone.

G. Ravi, a member of the Congress party, is also a member of the Consumers’ Welfare Board of the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Government of India.
