In a tragic incident which is suspected to be a suicide pact, a 45-year-old woman and her 22-year-old daughter ended their lives by falling under a moving train near Naganahalli Railway Station between Srirangapatna and Mysore Junction on Mysore-Bangalore Railway track yesterday.
The unfortunate victims of the tragedy have been identified as Shylaja, wife of B.V. Ranganath and her daughter Sharmila, residents of K.R.Nagar in Mysore district.
It is said that Ranganath was a Manager at a lodge in CG Complex in K.R.Nagar while Shylaja was a homemaker.
It is reported that Sharmila who was studying final year M. Com at Karnataka State Open University was engaged to an NRI based in Dubai against her wishes.
While Sharmila’s father and other relatives had advised her to get married to the said NRI, it is said that her mother was supporting Sharmila and the marriage was scheduled to be held in a month or two.
It is said that Shylaja and Sharmila who had come to the city to attend the naming ceremony of a close relative at Vidyaranyapuram, had stayed back. The two had reportedly called Ranganath in the morning and Ranganath in-turn is said to have asked them to wait for him.
At around 1 pm yesterday, Shylaja and Sharmila reportedly took the fatal decision and jumped under Mysore-bound Shatabdi Express from Chennai.
While Sharmila was crushed beyond recognition, Shylaja who suffered serious injuries breathed her last while being brought to K.R.Hospital in city. The identity of the victims was traced with the help of the cell phone found in the bag of Shylaja.
The two bodies were handed over to relatives after post-mortem at MMC & RI Mortuary and Railway Police have registered a case.
