A lesser-known Chamundeshwari temple near Lalitha Mahal Helipad at the foot of Chamundi Hill was desecrated by a group of miscreants last night who not only damaged the temple but also vandalised the sacred precincts and took away puja materials.

According to the Police, a group of about five persons who gained entry into the low-ceiling temple by cracking a portion of its roof, vandalised the temple and took away the brass lamps, brass plate and brass bells. But before that, they reportedly had a party within the temple premises as a liquor bottle, some food packets, use-and-throw plates and cups were found lying around, which indicates that the miscreants were not after cash or valuables.

According to Police, the miscreants tried to prise open the metal door of the temple using a metal trident placed outside the temple. But the trident broke. They then reportedly tried to break open the door with stone boulders, which too was unsuccessful. They broke the temple’s concrete roof and entered the temple, according to the sources.

The desecration was noticed by a few of the morning walkers. Temple’s priest Manohar, who lives in Shakthinagar, was aghast upon seeing the vandalism.

Nazarbad Police, led by PSI K.M. Maadu, visited the spot and have registered a case.
