Hundreds of students from different departments and hostels, along with members of Mysore University Research Scholars Association (MURSA) staged a demonstration near the Manasagangotri Canteen yesterday, demanding better facilities for students from SC, ST communities and other weaker sections, in terms of admission to Ph.D programmes, scholarships etc.

“The University is coming out with new rules and regulations that go against the interests of Dalit students. There is definitely a ploy by the University authorities to undermine the prospects of students from weaker sections of the society,” alleged the protestors.

Besides, the SC, ST students were ignored for Ph.D admissions in 2013 because of a rule which stipulated 50% as the qualifying marks in the entrance test. The PhD fees were also hiked to Rs. 1,000,” the protestors claimed and demanded meeting of their several demands that included stipulation of 35% marks for SC/ST students and 40 percent for others in the PhD entrance test and roll back of the hiked fee.

Accounting the University SC and ST Special Cell of not calling applications from Dalit students for scholarships, the protestors urged VC to address their problems soon.
