Mysore, Mar. 28 (RK&KMC)- The Director of Mines and Geological Department, Alphonsis, was caught red-handed by the Lokayukta sleuths while he was accepting a bribe of Rs. one lakh from R. Basavaraju, in return for issuing sand mining licence.
The Lokayukta team from Bangalore, led by Dy.SP Jagadesh Prasad, trapped the official at his residence near Vijaya Bank Circle in Kuvempunagar at 10.15 am yesterday.
Meanwhile, the Lokayukta Police have taken into custody Sunil Bose, son of former Minister and T. Narasipur MLA H.C. Mahadevappa, following a complaint about his involvement in the sand-mining licence racket.
Basavaraju, a supervisor at the sand mine belonging to Nadakrishna of Hakkudoddi village in T. Narasipur taluk, told Lokayukta in his complaint that Alphonsis had insisted on being paid the bribe of Rs. one lakh in a single instalment, despite Basavaraju's pleas to accept Rs. 50,000 as advance payment and collect the rest after issuing the licence.
Alphonsis is also said to have told Basavaraju that 75 per cent of the bribe will have to be paid to Sunil Bose, the MLA's son.
Mysore Lokayukta Inspector Gopala Krishna and staff assisted the Lokayukta cops from Bangalore in their raid and investigations.
