With the water level at KRS reservoir touching 121.80 ft. this morning, there is excitement all around over the reservoir once again touching its maximum level of 124.80 ft. after several years.

However, the tradition of Chief Minister offering ‘bagina’ at the dam as a gesture of gratitude to Goddess Cauvery, may run into rough waters this year in view of the model code of conduct likely to be enforced for the by-polls to Lok Sabha to be held on Aug. 21.

Mandya Deputy Commissioner B.N. Krishnaiah told SOM this morning that the district administration will be approaching the Election Commission to seek permission to continue the tradition and facilitate CM Siddharamaiah to do the honours.

The DC said that Cauvery Neeravari Nigam Ltd. will be seeking permission of the Election Commission after finalising a date for the auspicious ritual.

Mandya District In-Charge Minister M.H. Ambarish has been updated about KRS nearing its full capacity and about the need to perform bagina ritual.

The Chief Minister may shortly convene a meeting with the Irrigation Minister and others too regarding the ritual, said the DC.

Last time, the bagina was offered by the then Chief Minister D.V. Sadananda Gowda on Aug. 17, 2011. But it was in 2009, that the reservoir was full to the maximum level of 124 ft.
