A six-day internship programme on ‘Captive management and importance’ organised by the Forest Department for final year students of Forestry College, Ponnampet, commenced yesterday at City Zoo.

About 30 students are attending the programme featuring lectures by resource persons followed by deliberations.

Inaugurating the programme, Retired Principal Chief Conservator of Forests Dr. Ramesh Singh reiterated that deforestation was badly affecting the eco-balance thus triggering frequent human-animal conflict. He opined that the forestry students would be the ideal messengers to create an awareness among people on necessity of protecting the forests.

Briefing the students, Zoo Executive Director B.P. Ravi said that the Zoo provided the best opportunity for the students to study the animal behaviour in captivity. College Principal Dr. C.G. Kushalappa and Zoo Authority Member-Secretary R.S. Suresh were present.
