Mysore, Apr. 23 (MTY&KMC)- "Devanoor Lake located between Udayagiri and N.R. Mohalla in city, now a garbage dump, was inspected by the Mysore City Corporation (MCC) authorities today.
Star of Mysore had stirred the citizens and officials about the desecration of the lake in its issue dated Apr. 18, 2010.
In response, MUDA Commissioner P.C. Jayanna, who also is the In-Charge Commissioner of MCC, inspected the lake area this morning along with area Corporator Lakshmamma, former Mayor Dakshina-murthy, MCC Engineer (Zone 5) M.D. Kumar and office-bearers of North East Nagarikara Hitharakshana Samithi.
Advocate S. Arun Kumar, Convenor of Jaagruthi, a city-based NGO, who drew attention of the authorities towards the lake that is dying a slow death, took them around the water-body this morning.
Arun Kumar showed them the spot where sewage water of the locality was being drained into the lake, heaps of garbage being disposed almost every day, construction debris dumped into the lake and innards of poultry and sheep thrown into the lake on a daily basis, causing contamination of the lake that is mostly engulfed by an overgrowth of water hyacinth and algae.
Jayanna, after inspecting the lake area, told the group of localites numbering about 100 that the MCC Commissioner K.S. Raikar, who presently is on a tour of South Africa, had spoken to him over the phone and said that the lake development will be taken up under the JNNURM.
"After Raikar's return to the city, a meeting will be held with the officials concerned and a plan will be chalked out for cleaning and desilting, diverting the sewage water and maintaining it by preventing the dumping of garbage and other wastes," he said.
Hitharakshana Samithi President Yousuf Sharief, members Y. Danoji Rao, Dhanpal, K.P. Monnappa, Gerald, P. Hanumanthaiah and others were present during the inspection.
