In a major crackdown on autos in city plying with impro- perly calibrated fare meters, the officials of the Department of Legal Metrology led by Assistant Director Sarala Nayar yesterday imposed a fine of Rs. 500 each on as many as 90 autos in city and some of them were booked for demanding exorbitant fares from gullible passengers.
It is reported that based on complaints from citizens, Sarala Nayar launched the drive against faulty auto meters near Infosys, Easyday, Mall of Mysore and city Railway Station during which many autos were found plying without activating the fare meter besides collecting exorbitant fares.
She said that legal action would be initiated against owners of autos plying without properly calibrated fare meters.
She further said that as many as 10,000 autos in city have been registered at the department and added that the meters could get sealed at the office on a payment of Rs.100.
It is interesting to note that as many as 30 autos were found violating rules at city Railway Station premises alone which is frequented by thousands of passengers each day.
Inspectors Gopalakrishna, Mahadevaswamy, Raghavendra and Venugopal took part in the drive.
