About the awardees
Dr. Chidambaram has done all his research work in India. He is one of India’s distinguished experimental physicists and the research groups established by him in BARC in the fields of High Pressure Physics and Neutron Crystallography are regarded among the best in the world.
Dr. Chidambaram played a leading role in the design and execution of the Peaceful Nuclear Explosion experiment at Pokhran in 1974 and also led the DAE team which designed the nuclear devices and carried out the Pokhran tests in May 1998 in cooperation with the DRDO. He has made important contributions to many aspects of our nuclear technology.
He has D.Sc Degrees (h.c) from twenty Universities from India and abroad. He has more than 200 research publications in refereed journals and all his research work has been in India.
More recently his initiatives as Principal Scientific Adviser to Government of India, including the setting up of the Core Advisory Group for R&D in Electronics Hardware (CAREL), the creation of RuTAGs (Rural Technology Action Groups), the establishment of SETS (Society for Electronic Transactions and Security) headquartered in Chennai, etc., are making significant impact. He has emphasised the need for ‘Coherent Synergy’ (a phrase he has coined) in India’s S&T efforts to help put India on a sustained fast-growth path. He has also focused on the importance of ‘Directed Basic Research’ as an addition (not as a substitute) to self-directed basic research.
Prof. Debabrata Goswami is an eminent Chemist who has explored several research areas and has made novel contributions. His most important contributions are in interdisciplinary research in coherent control, quantum information processing and biomedical imaging through Femtosecond Pulse shaping spectroscopy. He has developed a pulse shaping enhanced multi-photon imaging technology which would be useful in the early diagnosis of cancer and to deliver higher laser dosage for photodynamic therapy.
He has also developed a femtosecond laser optical tweezer which has opened the way for sub-cellular and inter-cellular micro-manipulation and spatiotemporal control providing an approach to non-invasive curative procedures. He was the first to propose how the phase of a laser pulse can be critical in quantum computing. He enjoys translating high tech research to rural rustic environment and is the champion of the “Fabrication for Everyone” project.
Prof. P.S. Anil Kumar is an internationally recognised Physicist who has made significant contributions in the broad area of Spintronics and Magnetism. His research would have enormous impact on automated vehicular movement detection, traffic management and also have applications in strategic sector. His work is also important in the context of the rare-earth crisis in the world. In recognition of his academic excellence, Prof. Anil Kumar has been awarded the R.K. Bhalla Award, the Deblina Chowdhuri Award, Best Presentation Award at the MRSI AGM.
