KRS Dam & Brindavan Gardens History

The Krishnarajasagara Dam (KRS Dam) was constructed across the River Cauvery during the reign of Maharaja Krishnaraja Wodeyar IV. The project was guided by the legendary engineer Sir M. Visvesvaraya and completed in 1924.

The dam stretches approximately 8,600 feet in length and rises about 130 feet above the river bed. It was built using a traditional binding material called surkhi — a mixture of powdered brick and limestone — instead of modern cement. At the time, this technique was considered highly innovative and contributed to the strength of one of India’s longest masonry dams.

The structure also incorporated advanced automatic sluice gate mechanisms, inspired by designs developed by Sir M. Visvesvaraya. These flood-control systems were regarded as engineering breakthroughs in early 20th-century India.

Brindavan Gardens itself was laid out between 1927 and 1932 as a formal “show garden” in a structured geometric terrace style. The garden design complements the dam and transformed the reservoir area into a major public attraction. The reservoir submerged the old village of Kannambadi, and today the region remains vital for irrigation across large parts of Karnataka.
