Mysore, May 20 (SB)- International Museum Day was celebrated at Wellington House on Irwin Road here yesterday under the auspices of Indira Gandhi Rashtriya Manav Sangrahalaya-Southern Regional Centre (IGRMS).

CAVA Dean V.A. Deshpande inaugurated the five-day National Traditional Arts and Crafts workshop organised as part of the Museum Day at 5 pm. Speaking on the occasion, he said the workshop has encouraged him to introduce CAVA students to new art forms from different States and regions and added he would take a decision soon in this regard.

Diverse folk performances like Kamsale, Sutrada Gombe from Nagamangala, Somana Kunitha from Mandya etc. were presented in the evening. IGRMS In-charge Officer J. Vijaya Mohan, Assistant Ashokavardhana and Anupama were present at the inaugural function.

At the workshop that will be held till May 22, live demonstrations will be held on the creation of handicrafts of different States like Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, West Bengal, Orissa etc. by 12 groups of traditional artisans.

They will also exhibit paintings on the occasion. The workshop will be open from 10.30 am to 5.30 pm. The participating artisans are experts in mat-weaving (West Bengal), Worli painting (Maharashtra), Solo wood work (West Bengal), Scroll painting (Andhra Pradesh), Metal work (Bastar), Pattachitra (Orissa), Pattachitra (West Bengal), Clay work (Gujarat), Kondapalli toys (Andhra Pradesh), Mural painting (Kerala), Saora painting (Andhra Pradesh), Rangoli and Inlay work (Karnataka).

There will be a panel discussion on "Museums for social harmony" on May 22 at 11 am.

The valedictory will be held on May 22 at 6.30 pm, followed by a sitar recital by Smita Nagdev of Bhopal from 7 pm onwards.
