A four-day UGC-sponsored National workshop on ‘Basic Techniques in Molecular Biology and Bioinformatics’ jointly organised by the Postgraduate Department of Biotechnology, JSS College, Ooty Road, Association of Microbiologist of India and BIoard Pvt. Ltd began yesterday.

Prof. H.S. Prakash, Chairman, Dept. of Studies in Biotechnology, University of Mysore, who inaugurated the workshop, opined that modern Biology depends on Techniques of Molecular Biology and software used in Bioinformatics and students should master over the practical skills.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr. G. R. Janardhan, Chairman, Department of Studies in Botany, University of Mysore and President of AMI (Mysore Chapter) said that microbes play a major role as a model organism to understand the basic principles of DNA and its function.

In his presidential remarks Dr. J. Venkatesh, Dean, College of Horticulture, Tandavapura, Mysore, highlighted the importance of Molecular Biology and Bioinformatics techniques to produce transgenic plants to increase the yield of crop for agricultural growth.
