Srikanta Datta Narasimharaja Wadiyar turned 60 on Monday, as per the Hindu calendar. He is the fifth male scion of the more than 700-year-old Mysore royal family to reach this age.
Wadiyar was born on Feb. 19. But as per the Hindu calendar, his birthday falls in Phalguna, the last month of Hindu lunar calendar. Of the 25 male members who ruled Mysore, only four had crossed the age of 60. All others either died in battle or of natural causes before reaching 60.
Among the five who celebrated 60 years are: Mysore Ruler Raja Wadiyar (9th ruler of the dynasty) was born in the year 1552 and reigned from 1578-1617. Thus he lived for just 65 years. Before him Hiriya Betta Chamaraja Wadiyar-II ( 4th ruler: 1492-1553) and Thimma Raja Wadiyar II (5th ruler: 1511-1572) were the first to live past 60 years. But undoubtedly Mummadi Krishna Raja Wadiyar (22nd ruler: 1794-1868) was the oldest ever from the dynasty!
Thus, Srikanta Datta, the 26th successor of the dynasty, is the fifth to live past 60, according to Raja Chandra, son-in-law of the late Maharaja, Jayachamarajendra Wadiyar.
