Almost every Indian is familiar about legendary Bhagat Singh, a martyr, who laid down his life during the Indian freedom struggle. But, is anyone familiar with the name Vidyavati, Bhagat Singh’s mother? Not many. For those who have read Bhagat Singh’s life history, they would have come across the name Vidyavati, a mother who took over the responsibility of family affairs at a very young age.

Vidyavati, who was married to Kishen Singh, was an illiterate. Her husband encouraged her to study and made her a literate. Vidyavathi supported Bhagat Singh in his fight against the British rule in India.

This was theme of the play, ‘Punjabina Maathe’ enacted by students of Maharani Arts and Commerce College. The play was written and directed by Prof. Sheela Kumari, Dept. of Sanskrit, Maharani Arts and Commerce College. Speaking to Star of Mysore, Sheela Kumari said that the play was written three years ago but was enacted with few changes this year.

This being a serious play, students acted well to keep the audience glued to their chairs. The play which was enacted for 1 hr 10 mins had some interesting scenes.

The play had a very moving narration of the how Vidyavati was bestowed with the title ‘Punjab ki Maa’.

Before the staging of the play, the chief guests for the day, noted Kannada film actor Lohitashwa and his equally talented son, popular serial and film actor Sharath Lohitashwa spoke to the audience and shared their memorable experiences with them.

Rangayana Director Janardhan, Deputy Director S.I. Bhavikatti, Rangotsava convenor Saroja were present on the occasion.
