Two prestigious organisations in city — Defence Food Research Laboratory (DFRL) and Central Food Technological Research Institute (CFTRI) are said to be ready to help the stranded pilgrims at the flood ravaged areas in Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh by providing Ready-to-eat food packets.

It may be recalled that CFTRI had despatched tonnes of food items to the victims of tsunami in 2004.

The two organisations are learnt to be ready to despatch about 3 tonnes of food items in 20 varieties like Bisibele Bath, Uppittu, Pulav, Chappati and Dal not to exclude Jamoon.

DFRL Director Dr. Harshavardhan Batra was said to have held a meeting of senior Food Scientists on Wednesday to apprise them of the gravity of calamity in Northern States and necessity to despatch food items to stranded pilgrims in affected areas. DFRL is said to have come out with light food items called reconstitutable products which on mixing with water would increase three-fold in volume. Transport of light products would be easy and the items would be nutritious too, it is said. Uttarakhand State Disaster Management Secretary Bhaskar Anand said the assistance of DFRL and CFTRI could be taken only after the stranded people were evacuated to safe zones.
