Mysore, Mar. 8 (KK&SH)- In a delayed action, officials of Mysore City Corporation (MCC) this morning pulled down many giant hoardings said to be erected unlawfully near Sri Lakshmivenkataramana Swamy temple on KRS Road.

A squad of 30 gangmen, using Hitachi cranes and JCB machines, began action in Zone-4 of the City Corporation at 8.30 am and the parts of the 30 feet by 15 feet hoardings, which came crashing down on the roadsides and cut using gas cutting equipment were carted away in trucks, as hundreds of onlookers watched the proceedings.

A jeepful of Police were at the spot as a precautionary measure. Today’s action saw removal of 13 giant hoardings, which are said to have been standing for nearly 10 years past.

The Revenue Department of MCC is learnt to have prepared a list of unauthorised hoardings in all the zones across the city and the civic body is gearing itself to pull them down in the next few weeks, according to sources in the Corporation.

Notices had been issued to the advertisers about the unauthorised nature of the hoardings, asking them to remove them, according to Zone Assistant Commissioner Nagaraj. But political pressure seems to have been brought to stall the action.

It is learnt that the Traffic Police had also explained to the Corporation authorities about the hazard caused by the hoardings resulting in road mishaps. Agencies which erect the hoardings of the advertising companies are learnt to obtain permission for erecting a few hoardings but actually erect many times more, thus hoodwinking the officials in the Corporation.
