The State Government has decided to file a review petition in Supreme Court tomorrow seeking more time to hold elections to Urban Local Bodies (ULB) based on a reservation policy formulated on the basis of 2011 census.

Disclosing this to SOM here yesterday, District In-charge Minister S.A. Ramdas said: “The Supreme Court has given an order to the Election Commission to hold elections to local bodies before February end with reservation policy based on 2001 census. Hence the government is filing the review petition tomorrow.”

Continuing, Ramdas said: “The govts. in Andhra Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh have been told to hold elections to local bodies based on 2011 census. The State government contends to hold the polls on a similar fashion and hence the review petition will be filed. If the polls are held based on 2001 census, injustice will be meted out to SC\ST, Backward Class and Minorities who will be deprived of constitutional rights.”

The SC had ordered the State Govt. to submit the reservation policy before Feb. 3 and hold polls within February.
