Even Lord Brahma cannot prevent the construction of Swami Vivekananda Memorial at the NTM School premises. This is a dharma yuddha… logic and good sense are our weapons, said the litterateurs and intellectuals who attended a programme at the Institution of Engineers premises here yesterday under the aegis of District Kannada Sahitya Parishat and Swami Vivekananda Vichara Vedike, Mysore, to discuss about the opposition from some quarters to the proposed Memorial for the monk.

The programme, which lasted for nearly three hours, was presided over by litterateur Dr. Prabhushankar. Noted litterateurs Dr. D. Javaregowda (Dejagow), Dr. C.P. Krishnakumar (CPK) and others urged those opposing the proposed memorial to extend cooperation.

“Please do not oppose the memorial which will be a noble tribute to the great Saint of international acclaim. You are questioning our love for Kannada and agitation in favour of it. But when we came to the streets and agitated in favour of Kannada language, where were you?” asked Dr. Javaregowda and termed the agitation seeking to protect the NTM School as insincere and uncalled for.

He also suggested that they should read books on Swami Vivekananda and enrich their knowledge.

I have led many pro-Kannada agitations: Dejagow

“Contrary to what veteran journalist Krishna Vattam had said in his recent article that litterateurs have assumed a neutral stand with regard to the Memorial, we are not neutral but are in favour of the proposed Memorial,” said Dr. D. Javaregowda, popularly known as Dejagow.

“Vedantha is the basis for all religions. Swami Vivekananda was in favour of the welfare of women and Dalits. He did not encourage untouchability. We should never forget the contributions of the great Saint. Ours is a blessed country. My love for Kannada language is being questioned by some. But have they participated in as many pro-Kannada agitations that I have done? The NTM School was inaugurated by me. I should now feel sad when they remove the board bearing my name. But I am in favour of closing the school as it is a waste of government money,” he said.

Even Lord Brahma cannot prevent the Memorial: Dr. Malali

“It is sad that those who are opposing have not understood the objective of the Memorial. The National Committee (to commemorate Vivekananda’s 150th birth anniversary) of which Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh and Sonia Gandhi are members, has said that the memorial be set up at the place where Swamiji stayed. Let alone Chief Minister Siddharamaiah, not even Lord Brahma can prevent the setting up of the Memorial,” said Dr. Malali Vasanth Kumar and added, “Kannada must not be commercialised. Nobody has taken Kannada language on contract and neither is it anyone’s private property.”

This is a Dharma Yuddha: Dr. CPK

“We litterateurs are devoid of any party or politics. None need to brand us. Ours is a dharma yuddha… a war of non-violence… logic and good sense are our weapons,” said Dr. C.P. Krishnakumar (CPK) and termed the allegations that they were anti-Kannada and anti-Dalits as ridiculous.

“There are very few who have worked like us for the development of Kannada language,” he said and added that Kannada language faces many problems. It should not be limited to one school alone. “We are not killing a school but we are going to develop the Devaraja School and merge the NTM School with it. Opposing an issue just for the sake of opposition is uncalled for. There is no point in being adamant. Let us not be like a frog in the well but have a broad-minded outlook,” he advised.

Memorial has historic significance: Dr. Chidananda Gowda

“Setting up of the Memorial has historic significance. The Americans have erected a statue of Abraham Lincoln at a place where he stayed for 17 hours. Swami Vivekananda’s statues have been erected at three places in Chicago.

Swami Vivekananda had stayed at the NTM School premises for a few days which has immense historic significance and hence, setting up a memorial at the place is an ideal proposal,” said Dr. Chidananda Gowda.
