Mysore, Sept. 23 (BRS)- Issue of a special stamp and release of a silver coin to mark this year's Dasara festival, being the 400th anniversary of the event, are on the anvil.
Deputy Commissioner Harsha Gupta disclosed during a meeting of officials here yesterday to discuss preparations for the ensuing festival that the district administration has requested the Department of Posts to release a special silver coin and also a special stamp in connection with the festival.
It may be recalled that after the fall of Vijayanagar kingdom, the Wadiyars of Mysore restarted the Dasara celebration in 1610.
Therefore, it was a momentous occasion to bring out the special stamps as well as the silver coin, Harsha Gupta remarked. The proposed design for the silver coin of 10 gram includes the insignia of the rulers of Mysore namely Gandabherunda (double-headed eagle). The First Day Envelope will also be released along with the special stamp.
Vintage car rally
A vintage car rally will be held during the festival, the DC disclosed, adding that Dr. Veerendra Heggade, Dharmadhikari of Dharmasthala, had agreed to spare his vintage car for the rally.
Misuse of Dasara passes and tickets by faking will be prevented by using bar coding. The duty passes issued to officials would also be bar coded. The measure also addresses security concerns, he said.
Folk art troupes will be provided special vehicles to move around in city and neighbouring districts for pre-Dasara publicity, he said.
Tenders have been invited for awarding works of erecting dais, shamiyana and other needs of the festival. Several agencies have been identified for the purpose, he added.
