Shanthanu Sinha, a 2009 batch IPS officer hailing from Delhi, yesterday took over as the new Deputy Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) from the outgoing DCP Basavaraj Malagatti at his office on Mirza road in city.

Malagatti has been transferred on directions from the Election Commission of India to transfer officers who have held the office for a period of three years and more.

Sinha thus has become the first direct IPS appointee for the post after a gap of 16 years after M.A. Saleem, who had been posted in 1987 and was later succeeded by another senior officer P. Ravindranath.

An engineering graduate, Sinha worked for five years in a private company before joining the Police force in Shimoga on probation. From there he was transferred to Chennapatna as an Assistant Superintendent of Police and subsequently posted to Mysore.

Interestingly, the outgoing DCP, who was on the verge of completing three years in the month of May, is yet to be given a posting.
