Mysore, Oct. 11 (MTY&KMC)- The Kesaru Gadde Ota (slush field race) held as part of Raitha Dasara in Varuna village near here was witnessed by a large number of villagers and urban folk yesterday.

In the event conducted by the Raitha Dasara Sub-Committee, only 18 out of the 21 athletes selected at the taluk level participated. The race was held in three teams of six athletes each. Two were selected from each team and made to run in the final race in the slush-filled paddy field, for a distance of 200 metres. They were cheered by hundreds of onlookers with claps, hooting whistles and shouts of encouragement.

The first prize was won by Nagaraju of Hoskote village in Nanjangud taluk, second prize by Pradeep of Tirumakudalu village in T. Narasipura taluk and Satish of Varuna village. The field was specially prepared for the event by filling it with water and ploughing it several times.

Unlike the usual race, the sprinters had a tough time running in the muddy waters while the onlookers enjoyed the sport.

The event was earlier inaugurated by Raitha Dasara Sub-Committee Executive President K.R. Krishnaiah and President S.D. Mahendra.
