The Zonal competitions of Shanti Swaroop Bhatnagar Memorial Indoor Games tournament, scheduled from Jan. 21 to 23, was inaugurated by Pramoda Devi Wadiyar at CSIR-Central Food Technological Research Institute (CFTRI) here yesterday.
International Chess Grand Master and Ekalavya Awardee Thej Kumar was the chief guest.
The SS Bhatnagar tournament is a sport event held among the national laboratories of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), New Delhi, of which CSIR-CFTRI is a member.
The Indoor games tournament is held every alternative year first as four zonal events comprising 10 laboratories of a zone. Teams from 10 laboratories from Hyde-rabad, Lucknow, Delhi, Kolkata and Karaikudi will be competing in Chess, Bridge, TableTennis, Shuttle Badminton and Carrom. About 200 sports persons will be vying for a national place in the three-day event from today.
Pramoda Devi Wadiyar flagged off the event by releasing balloons and pigeon along with the guests.
Dr. P. V. Salimath, Chief Scientist, CSIR-CFTRI, presided over the event. K. Gururaja administered the oath.
The event will conclude with a valedictory function on Jan. 23. Dr. B. B. Borse, Vice-President, Food Research Institute Gymkhana (FRIG), welcomed.
Dr. Suresh Sakhare, Secretary, proposed a vote of thanks.
The CFTRI School Band presented a brief and memorable band on the occasion.
