On a tip-off that illegal activities were going on at the District Jail at Karnangeri on the outskirts of the town, a team led by Dy.SP Rajeev Manga swooped on the jail yesterday and recovered Rs. 31,000 in cash, three mobile phones and a few lethal weapons including three knives, a razor blade along with two ATM cards and a PAN card.
A complaint was said to have been lodged with Madikeri Rural Police alleging that a group of persons from Mangalore had visited the jail recently on the pretext of interacting with the inmates and had threatened the life of one of the inmates after kicking up a row.
Speaking to the press, SP Anuchet said that all the items found during the raid have been seized. He added that the presence of ATM card indicated that there were cash transactions in jail. He said that a report would be sent to the ADGP (Prisons) and a thorough probe would be initiated soon.
This is said to be the first Police raid in the history of the jail.
