Mysore, July 18 (KCU&KK)- The People's Park near Sub-Urban Bus Stand here will soon wear a new look which otherwise would have continued to lie in shambles.

With Mayor Sandesh Swamy setting the ball rolling for total cleanliness drive of the city, about 150 Pourakarmikas assisted by two excavators, a leveller and four tippers arrived at 6 am today at People's Park and took up thorough cleaning of the shrubs, weeds and garbage littered in the park. Asst. Commissioner Vijaya, Corporation Health Officer Dr. Nagaraj, Environmental Engineer Rekha and former Dy. Mayor Sharadamma supervised the hectic operation.

Seeing a nursery housed in the park totally left uncared for, Sandesh Swamy took the officers of Horticulture Department to task and instructed them to get it restored immediately.

Speaking to SOM, Sandesh Swamy assured to develop the park on the lines of Lalbagh in Bangalore. "It will be developed as a heritage park with a rock garden within. A good Central Library will also come up in the premises. Honouring the Supreme Court order, a temple and a mosque unauthorisedly built inside the park will be demolished to make way for the developments," explained Swamy.

Corporation Commissioner K.S. Raikar told SOM on phone that a sizeable portion of People’s Park has been encroached upon by a few commercial establishments including a prestigious hotel. He assured to get them evicted soon.

However, Sandesh Swamy contended that all the details would be collected before initiating the eviction process.
