The Maharani New Type Model Kannada School, popularly known as NTM School located on Narayana Shasthri Road in city, is wearing a deserted look since the past two decades for want of sufficient number of student strength.
It is ironic that though neither the authorities concerned nor those pro-Kannada enthusiasts made any efforts to increase the student strength to the school located in the heart of the city, there is suddenly a hue and cry to save the school from a section of the citizenry.
Those who are opposing the proposal of converting the school area into a memorial for Swami Vivekananda, could have improved the school by getting their children or relatives’ children admitted to the school. “Why not pave the way for setting up the proposed Swami Vivekananda Memorial by admitting the students of NTM School to the nearby Devaraja Government School which has a more conducive educational environment?” is the question being raised by many.
Meanwhile, some others having political pull, are creating a controversy out of this issue by going to the extent of asking Chief Minister Siddharamaiah to take back the land already given to Ramakrishna Mutt for this purpose. Some litterateurs too are opposing the transfer of school land probably without knowing the details of the issue.
The voices raised in favour of saving the NTM School are uncalled for because the school has only 26 students and has been a burden on the State exchequer for the past two decades. Those speaking about saving the school should have admitted at least one student to the school on their behalf, by which the problem of closure would not have arisen, said a senior politician of the city.
