In a major relief to tourists visiting the historic Srirangapatna town, the Mandya District Administration has cancelled leases of all parking contractors at the tourist places in the town and stopped collection of parking fee with effect from July 1 to prevent exploitation and harassment of tourists by parking attendants.

The Srirangapatna Town Panchayat, Sri Ranganatha Swamy Temple Trust and the Wakf Board which had issued parking leases to contractors at different places coming under their jurisdiction has withdrawn the leases.

It is said that the District Administration was forced to cancel these leases following complaints from tourists who alleged that they were being harassed and exploited by parking attendants who were reportedly charging more than the prescribed fee.

Many tourists had complained that parking attendants at Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple, Daria Daulat, Nimishamba Temple, Sangam, Summer Palace of Tipu, Ghosai Ghat and other places in the historic town were charging separate parking fee for each location besides not issuing receipts.

Meanwhile, Mandya DC M.N. Krishnaiah said that it was decided to cancel the parking fee immediately owing to repeated allegations from tourists and reports in the media.

He also asked temple authorities and town municipality officers to appoint security guards at tourist spots to keep a watch on tourist vehicles.

While the one-time parking fee was Rs. 5 for motorcycles, car drivers had to shell out Rs. 30 even if the parking duration was two minutes, SUVs/MUVs was Rs. 40, and for maxicabs/buses it was Rs. 50.
