Marking the ongoing nation-wide E-Week focussed on environmental protection, students of National Institute of Engineering (NIE) took out a ‘Greenathon’ on bicycles from the college on Manandavadi Road here yesterday travelling through the main thoroughfares of city.
The event was organised by NIE-Centre for Renewable Energy and Sustainable Technology (NIE-CREST) which was flagged off by city Police Commissioner K.L. Sudhir, who cycled along with the students for some distance. The ‘Greenathon’ went on till evening and halted at 10 strategic points in city, presented a demonstration on renewable energy equipments and created an awareness among people on utilisation of solar energy and biofuel.
Addressing the students after launching the event, Sudhir assured that all Police Stations and the Police Bhavan would switch over to solar power gradually. He added that biofuel would be used in all Police vehicles henceforth.
NIE-CREST Director Shyamsundar was present. Devaraja Police Inspector Kantharaj, SIs Lepaksha and Suresh Kumar too joined the students on cycles near Kote Anjaneyaswamy temple.
