The city is likely to get a Sports University for which a budgetary allocation will be made next year, said MLA Vasu.

Speaking after inaugurating the District Athletics Meet held under the aegis of Mysore District Athletics Association (MDAA) at Oval Grounds here this morning, Vasu, who also is the Chairman of MDAA, said he had discussed the matter with Chief Minister Siddharamaiah who has agreed in principle for the Sports University proposal.

Granting a financial aid of Rs. 25,000 for the sports meet, Vasu said that in view of the poll code of conduct, he was not in a position to speak about policy matters or to extend financial aid.

Boys and girls, numbering nearly a 1,000 from schools and colleges in city and rural areas, are participating in the Under-14, Under-16 and Under-20 categories. Athletes selected at the district level will be participating in the State junior athletic meet at Shimoga during August.

Journalist Rajashekar Koti, University of Mysore’s Physical Education Director Dr. C. Krishna, Mysore DPEO C. Mariappa, international athlete and MDAA President S. Somashekar, MDAA Vice-Presidents B.L. Jagadish and Mahesh Ballal were present. Various track and field events will be held.
