"Writer late R.K. Narayan’s house in Yadavagiri here will be preserved as a memorial after getting the approval of the Finance Department,” clarified Vinay Kumar Sorake, Minister for Urban Development, who inspected the house after holding a review meeting on development works in city yesterday.
Briefing the Minister on the developments, MUDA Commissioner Dr. C.G. Betsurmath said that the previous government had given instructions to MUDA and MCC to jointly take up restoration work on RKN’s house and convert it into a memorial. He further said that after the demise of Narayan, his grandchildren had sold the property to a builder and when the latter came forward to demolish the building, a few concerned citizens of city expressed opposition and urged the government to buy the property and convert it to a memorial in honour of Narayan.
Dr. Betsurmath further added that the then Urban Development Minister S. Suresh Kumar took interest in the proposal and mooted the memorial project. He alleged that the project was yet to take off as a few Corporators opposed the proposal in the MCC Council meeting but reiterated that MUDA had allocated its part of the funds in the budget for the project and even a blue print was made ready for the construction.
