Mysore, Aug. 3 (KCU&KK)- A mega three-day inter-college literary and cultural competition-2010 organised by University of Mysore commenced this morning at EMMRC auditorium in Manasagangotri here.

Noted Music Director Hamsalekha, who inaugurated the event, pointed out the world was galloping at the pace of mind which cannot match the pace of heart beat.

"No doubt there has been a phenomenal growth in science and technology giving rise to materialistic achievements but at the cost of cultural degradation. Following the pace of heartbeat gives a culturally strong society contrary to aping the speed of brain," he opined.

Hamsalekha quipped "nuclear energy technology has landed in the hands of 'monkeys' which can literally destroy the world in no time."

"Mysore is the real cultural capital. Talents should be identified in students and nurtured in time. The 'desi' flavour in art and culture should be given prominence. Despite the advent of so- called fast movies, good ones with true meaningful gist are still welcome by cine-goers," he said.

According to Prof. D.K. Srinivas, Director, Student Welfare, the competitions would be held at five auditoria— Fine Arts College, EMMRC and at the Departments of Statistics, Commerce and Physics — from 9 am to 5 pm in 26 categories like classical, instrumental, folk, western and light music, dance, group singing, film hits, mimicry, mime show, mono-acting, drawing, quiz, elocution, clay modelling, debate, rangoli and skits.

About 1500 students from 180 colleges in the districts of Mysore, Mandya, Hassan and Chamarajanagar are participating.
