“It is highly unfortunate and condemnable that of late, print and electronic media, which are bestowed with the responsibility of uplifting social justice, are functioning like courts by jumping into their own conclusions over many issues,” averred Karnataka Media Academy Chairman M.A. Ponnappa here yesterday.
He was speaking after inaugurating a State-level interaction on ‘Trends in Today’s Media’ organised by the Department of Mass Communication and Journalism as part of its Diamond Jubilee celebrations at the Centenary Hall of Maharaja’s College in city.
Calling upon the print and electronic media to introspect, he questioned how wise it was for the media to function like a court by going about in a self-imposed adjudicating manner which had often led to controversies.
Urging journalists not to assume that there was no one to regulate their activities, Ponnappa said that the Press Council of India Chairman Markandey Katju had unleashed a weapon on them by demanding appointment of only qualified people as journalists, which is a welcome development.
Oneindia.com editor S.K. Shamsundar, speaking on the occasion, said that the left and right concept, which was hitherto existing in other fields, had also conquered journalism and expressed concern that journalism would vanish if news is not seen and presented in its real form. Calling upon Kannada journalists to update their knowledge with the use of available technology, he said that thousands of students, who were entering journalism each year, should concentrate on gaining knowledge. MDJA General Secretary K. Deepak regretted that Journalism Departments in many colleges lacked necessary infrastructure which was affecting the career of budding journalists.
Maharaja’s College Principal Prof. Latha K. Biddappa presided. HoD of Journalism Prof. Pramila B. Kunnur, Administrative Officer Dr. Nanjegowda, lecturers J. Lohit, Kumaraswamy and Shwetha Hans were present.
More that 500 journalism students from various colleges interacted with Ponnappa, Shamsundar, Deepak and film Director M.S.Ramesh on subjects like dress culture in films, ways adopted by several channels to increase their TRP, information provided by channels in urgency and other aspects.
