Cong. - 22 seats, JD(s) - 20, BJP - 12, SDPI - 2, KJP - 1, BSR - 1 & Independents - 7

As anticipated, the Congress party has retained its 22 seats in the Mysore City Corporation (MCC)for the 2013-18 term, elections for which were held on March 7 and the results declared today.

However, the results come as a jolt to the BJP government in the State as the party has lost six seats, down to 12 seats from last term’s 18. For JD(S), the numerical strength has come down from 21 to 20 seats.

The number of Independents getting elected is also higher, including new entrants KJP (of former Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa), BSR (of former Minister B. Sriramulu) and Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI), which have together won 11 seats, thus poised to play the role of king-makers if the Congress and JD(S) fail to form an alliance.

BJP, as usual, will adorn the Opposition benches.

Former Mayor H.N. Srikantaiah has been elected for the fourth consecutive term while three other former Mayors elected for third consecutive term are Ayub Khan, Sandesh Swamy and Purushotham. Former Mayor Pushpalatha Chikkanna got elected for 2nd term.

After recounting of votes for Ward. No. 4 following objections raised by BJP candidate and sitting Corporator M.D. Parthasarathy, N. Sunil Kumar of Congress was confirmed elected by a narrow margin of two votes. Earlier, Parthasarathy had suspected foul play as his followers were reportedly not present at the counting centres. Even as Parthasarathy’s supporters were celebrating victory, the final result showed that the sitting Corporator had lost by a narrow margin of two votes to Sunil Kumar.

The counting process was held amidst tight security at Maharani Arts and Commerce College on JLB Road. Police personnel, Election officers and others deputed for the counting arrived at the location as early as 6 am and reported to their respective in-charge officials. Later, at around 8.15 am, the strong room was opened in the presence of Deputy Commissioner Dr. Ramegowda, the candidates and their agents.

The Police had barricaded the roads leading to the college within 200 mts range. This apart, entry into the counting halls was restricted to only candidates and their agents. Each Ward was allocated a table for counting and the entire counting process was video-recorded.
