South Graduates' Constituency Legislative Council polls

Mysore, July 4 (KK&KMC) – BJP candidate G. Madhusudan has been elected as the MLC from South Graduates' constituency, defeating his nearest rival K.T. Srikantegowda of the JD(S) by 5,110 votes.

Results were announced at 6 am today at JSS Arts, Science and Commerce College on Ooty road where the counting was held.

The counting process, which began at 8 am yesterday, went on till early this morning, adding up the first preference votes of the other 23 candidates to reach the stipulated target of 21,598 votes, that is 50 per cent of the total votes polled (46,887) after deduction of 3,692 invalid votes.

After the end of 3 preliminary rounds of counting, Madhusudan had secured 15,489 votes, K.T. Srikantegowda had got 12,514 votes and Javagal Manjunath of Congress got 5,750 votes. Significantly, Independent candidate M. Lakshmana got 3,697 votes. They were followed by Independents Venkatesh Murthy (1,428) and Nanjundaiah (1,374 votes).

Then followed the elimination round in which second preference votes of the lowest scorers were added to highest scorers.

A clearer pattern of the candidates emerged after the 23rd round in which Madhusudan got 16,432 votes and Srikantegowda got 13,650 votes while Manjunath got 6,494 votes; after sharing Lakshmana's votes.

In the 24th round, after sharing of Manjunath’s votes among Madhusudan and Srikantegowda, they gained 17,924 and 14,570 votes respectively. Yet they were falling short of the target of 21,598 votes.

In the final 25th round, it was with the addition of Srikantegowda's second preference votes that Madhusudan reached 21,624 votes, 26 votes more than the stipulated target.

Madhusudan was officially declared winner at 6 am — not a convincing victory for BJP.
