Sleuths of Haryana Police, assisted by Mysore City Police, yesterday arrested a 30-year-old Nigerian on charges of phishing (the luring of an internet user to reveal personal details like passwords and credit card information on a fake web page or email form pretending to come from a legitimate company) an account of a Haryana-based businessman and cheating him of Rs. 10 lakh. He was reportedly hiding in the house of his girlfriend Jessica, a Tanzanian studying in city and residing in Vijayanagar here.
DCP (Law & Order) Basavaraj Y. Malagathi said that the nabbed Nigerian has been identified as Immanuel Joseph and added that Joseph had allegedly hacked the bank account of a Haryana-based businessman named Anil Mathil online and cheated him of Rs. 10 lakh.
Acting on a tip-off, the Haryana Police arrested Joseph from his girlfriend’s place, Malagathi said and added that it was still not clear whether Joseph’s girlfriend is a partner in the crime.
It is reported that Joseph, who had hacked the account of Anil, had withdrawn mo- ney from an ATM which provided the cops with vital clues, following which they reached Mysore.
It is said that Haryana cops took Joseph to Bangalore yesterday evening from where he would be taken to Haryana and produced before a jurisdictional court.
Joseph’s girl friend Jessica, who was summoned to the Vijayanagar Police Station, allegedly abused media persons and hurled stones at the cameraman of a TV channel.
Joseph is said to be a cloth merchant in Bangalore and used to visit Jessica’s place often. Jessica is a 3rd year BBM student at JSS Women’s College in Saraswathipuram. She is in Mysore since the past three years.
