“The food processing sector should organise better and foray into rural areas,” suggested Dr. D.N. Reddy, Chairman, Recruitment and Assessment Centre, New Delhi.
He was speaking at the Golden Jubilee Oration programme of Defence Food Research Laboratory (DFRL) at its premises in Siddharthanagar here yesterday.
“The concept of DFRL earmarked only for the defence sector should be changed by adopting rural areas to promote new concepts of food processing. The field of agro-processing has a good social impact in economy with a large size of country’s population still dependent on agriculture. However, the value addition in food production needs a drastic increase,” pointed out Dr. Reddy.
Continuing, he said that the agro-food processing equipment sector was less advanced in technology in the country compared to the developed countries which should get a boost. The food sector had the highest multiplier effect of any industry and a thrust in agriculture would push up the Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
DFRL Director Dr. H.V. Batra welcomed. Additional Director Dr. K. Radhakrishna proposed a vote of thanks. An expo of new food products was also organised on the occasion.
