Tension prevailed at the Kabini Reservoir here yesterday for sometime as farmers led by Karnataka Rajya Raitha Hitharakshana Samithi President Kurbur Shanthakumar was stopped from offering ‘Bagina’ as per tradition to the river.

It is reported that farmers were angered when Kabini Reservoir Executive Engineer Mariswamy told farmers that they cannot enter and offer ‘Bagina’ now, as the dam was not full.

Shanthakumar in his reaction to Mariswamy’s objections reportedly said “If the dam is not full, how can you release water at the rate of 10,000 cusecs per day from the reservoir to Tamil Nadu” and alleged that the engineer was using this as an excuse to stop them.

Just as the situation was about to worsen, Dy.SP Mahadevaiah intervened and held talks over phone with senior officials of the Water Resources Department after which the farmers were allowed to carry out the rituals of offering ‘Bagina’ at the dam site with women taking out a procession along with folk artistes.

Meanwhile, Shanthakumar has demanded the Government to take disciplinary action against the Water Resources Department officials for insulting farmers by denying them opportunity to offer puja.

KRRS leaders Athahalli Devaraj, Kabini Shivanagappa, B.T. Prabhakar, T.C. Mahadevappa, Kiragasur Shankar, Hallikerehundi Bhagyaraj, Nandikamba Mahadevappa and others were present.
