Thousands of devotees are taking the bholy dip at the 9th Kumbha Mela which commenced yesterday at the Triveni Sangama here.

Inaugurating the Kumbha Mela, Deputy Chief Minister R. Ashok said: "The tradition and religious culture of the State should be protected for the future. A flowing river is equated to mother symbolising emotion, devotion and purity. The Triveni Sangama will be developed well with the Chief Minister announcing the project tomorrow when he visits the place."

Speaking on the occasion, MP R. Dhruvanarayan wished that the Kumbha Mela would bring peace and prosperity to the people.

Religious rituals, special puja and homa were performed at Agasthyeswara Swamy temple marking the beginning of the Kumbha Mela.

Suttur Seer Sri Shivarathri Deshikendra Swamiji, Adichunchanagiri Seer Sri Nirmalanandanatha Swamiji, Vattal Mutt Seer Siddalinga Shivacharya Swamiji, Kanaka Gurupeetha Seer Sri Shivanandapuri Swamiji and Sri Somanatha Swamiji of Adichunchanagiri Mutt Branch graced the occasion.

Former Legislator H. Gangadharan, Scholar Dr. T.V. Satyanarayana and columnist Chakravarthi Soolibele delivered lectures on religion.

DC Dr. Ramegowda, Southern Zone IGP K. Ramachandra Rao, Police Superintendent R. Dilip, Taluk Panchayat President Tumbala Andhani, ZP Members K. Mahadev, Renuka Nagaraja and others were present.
