A tiff between a two-wheeler rider and an auto rickshaw driver which could have turned into a group clash with hundreds of supporters on either side was averted by a duty-conscious Police Officer at Bilikere Police limits in the district yesterday.
The incident occurred when Santosh, a resident of Manuganahalli was travelling with his wife on his two-wheeler on Gaddige Road near Santhemala in Bilikeri at around 2.30 pm. An auto driver who was coming from the opposite direction is said to have come very close to the bike which resulted in Santosh and his wife falling down from the bike.
Santosh questioned auto driver Puttaraju regarding the incident. This resulted in a quarrel which also saw Santosh slapping Puttaraju which led to him informing his fellow auto rickshaw drivers who came in large numbers to his support. Meanwhile, Santosh also informed his friends in his village who too arrived in large numbers.
Learning about the incident, ASI Mariswamy Gowda of Bilikere Police Station rushed to spot and held talks with the two parties and managed to convince them to refrain from harming each other.
Though ASI Mariswamy was successful in bringing the situation under control, the situation at the place remained tense for some time. It is believed that both the groups were gearing up with lethal weapons, bats, wickets and other items to clash with each other.
The ASI who collected information from one his informants, informed the matter to Dy.SP Muddumahadevaiah, Circle Inspector Chandrashekar and SI Chennegowda. The senior officials informed SP R. Dileep who rushed to the spot and held a two-hour long meeting with both the parties.
The timely action from ASI Mariswamy avoided the possible loss of lives and properties at both the places. SP R. Dilip also announced a reward to ASI Mariswamy and lauded him for his presence of mind.
