Bhavan’s Priyamvada Birla Institute of Management, Vijayanagar, had organised a talk on Disaster Mitigation by Dr. Uwe Dorka, Professor of Civil Engineering and Chairman of South East Asia Earthquake Risk Reduction Centre on Monday.
During the talk, he briefed the students and faculty about the importance of earthquake engineering and disaster mitigation. He also spoke about how he was co-ordinating the South East Asian Network for Disaster and Environmental Engineering (SEAN-DEE) project.
Prof. Dorka also gave examples of earthquake mitigation at a few places in the world like Kobe in Japan during the Hyogo Ken Nambu earthquake of 1995 and Izmit earthquake of 1999 in Istanbul, Turkey.
Prof. Shamsunder of NIE, who introduced the guest speaker, also spoke on the occasion.
N. Ramanuja, Chairman, Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Karnataka, in his presidential address spoke on the importance of networking, especially in the area of disaster mitigation within our continent.
Stating that Asia is among the most vulnerable continents in handling disasters, he said that all of us should work towards disaster risk mitigation.
Dr. A. V. Narasimha Murthy, Chairman, Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Mysore, welcomed. Faculty of the Institute were present on the occasion.
