The Department of Archaeology, Museums and Heritage has issued a notice Dr. R. Gopal, Director (Archaeology) seeking an explanation regarding his alleged statement against the department at a function in city recently and published in newspapers.

P.S. Vastrad, Commissioner, Department of Archaeology, Museums and Heritage, in a press release, has stated that a notice had been issued to Dr. Gopal seeking explanation for his alleged statement that mafia was involved in the functioning of Archaeology Department.

Further, Vastrad has clarified that there was no mafia being involved in the functioning of the department. Moreover, works undertaken by the department is done transparently and estimation for the works undertaken is sent to Government and only after the approval by the technical committee, tender process is undertaken through e-procurement as per govt. guidelines.

He further stated that the works are monitored by the Archaeology Conservation Engineer and other officials who constantly monitoring the works, provide suitable suggestions and guidelines to the contractor. This apart, the department also takes the photographs of the site before and during the works for documentation.

Vastrad stated similar procedure was being taken for the works being taken up under the 13th Finance Commission and a 3rd party agency was also being appointed to examine the works and submit a report to the Department.

The payment to the contractor was being released only after proper examination of the works, Vastrad said and added that the department had not received any complaints with regard to the works undertaken so far.
