Wrestling bouts, one of the principal attractions of the annual Mysore Dasara festival, will be held from Oct. 8 to 16 at D. Devaraja Urs Multipurpose Sports Facility, disclosed Pailwan D.V. Prahlad Rao, Chairman, Dasara Wrestling Sub-Committee.
Addressing a press meet in Pathrakarthara Bhavan here on Tuesday, he said that it had been decided to conduct the event in a grand manner and the preparations for the show were going on at a brisk pace.
The 29th State-level men's wrestling competition will be held from Oct. 8 to 10, the 3rd State-level women's wrestling on Oct. 11 and wrestling bouts for boys and girls below the age of 16 years will also be held on that day. The 5th National-level wrestling competitions for men and women will be held on October 12 and 13, he disclosed.
In addition to the wrestling competitions, various contests for the titles of Dasara Kishora, Dasara Kumara, Dasara Kesari and Dasara Kanteerava will be held, he said. The rules relating to Dasara Kanteerava had been relaxed this time, allowing wrestlers above the age of 74 years also to take part, he added.
This year's wrestling competitions will be formally declared open at 3 pm on Oct. 8 by Minister Revu Nayak Belamagi, whom it is planned to bring on to the wrestling ring, he said. The closing ceremony of the event will be held at 3 pm on Oct. 14 and prizes will be presented to winners of various bouts, he added.
Aimed at promoting rural sports, the Union Government has introduced the Pyka programme. Under this programme, wrestlers in the below 16 years class selected at taluk level competitions will be facilitated to take part in the district level, State-level and also national-level competitions. Pyka contests are conducted for under-16 wrestlers for this series of competitions, he explained.
Contestants taking part in the 3rd women's wrestling competitions and those boys and girls under-16 participating in Pyka category will be subject to weighing-in at 2 pm on Oct. 10 and certificates issued. The weighing-in for contestants of the 5th national-level wrestling championships for men and women will be at 2 pm on Oct. 11.
As a roof has been laid for the D. Devaraj Urs Multipurpose sports facility, the wrestling events will be held without any interruption if it rains and as stone slabs have been laid around the wrestling facility, more spectators can view the proceedings, he said.
Allowance will be paid to wrestlers taking part at State-level and national-level championship. They will also be provided with various conveniences, he said.
