Emboldened by the recent heroic acts by good citizens, it seems, public are giving the much needed assistance to the Police in nabbing chain-snatchers and phone-snatchers.
The latest such incident is that of two mobile phone-snatchers, who were chased by daring youths, caught hold of and handed over to the Police on Tuesday at around 10.45 pm.
These two phone-snatchers have been identified as Manjunath (18), resident of Rammanahalli village and Somesh (19), resident of Srirampura.
They were caught near the Old Statue at Palace North Gate. The duo had robbed a person of his phone by threatening him at knife-point and razor. A few alert citizens in the vicinity chased the fleeing duo and with help from the Devaraja Police, managed to overpower them. Police are on the lookout for two other accomplices, namely Abhishek of Sannayyanahundi and Prathap of Lalithadripura, who managed to flee the scene.
How it happened: Rakshit of Somwarpet and Sukesh of Udupi, working as waiters in Fishland bar and restaurant near Siddappa Square, who were on their way to their native places on Tuesday night, were walking towards the Sub-Urban Bus Stand from the City Bus Stand when they were abruptly stopped by a gang of four persons who threatened Rakshit and Sukesh at knife-point, snatched Rakshit’s phone and fled. Upon hearing the shouts of the duo, Mahadeva, who runs a tea shop nearby and Garuda Mall security guards managed to catch hold of Manjunath and Somesh. They then informed the Police Control Room about the incident. Devaraja Police Station’s Garuda and night-beat personnel, who took the duo into custody, said that the other two accomplices were involved in the phone-snatching incidents reported elsewhere in the city in the past week.
Based on a written complaint lodged by Rakshit, Devaraja Inspector Kantharaju, Sub-Inspector Lepakshi registered a case and upon producing them before a magistrate, they were remanded to judicial custody.
Garuda staff Nanjundaswamy, Basavaraju, night-patrol Police Nanjundeshwara and Lakshmikanth took part in the operation.
