So, what is new in this year’s “world-famous” Mysore Dasara of royal splendor, one might ask and the answer, as usual, will be the lightings and illumination — a string of bulbs hung on arches along the city’s thoroughfares, upon prominent buildings and of course, the lighting at the Palace.

However, this Dasara, A.B. Ibrahim, who recently assumed charge as the Managing Director of Chamundeshwari Electricity Supply Company (CESC) and who had served as the City Corporation Commissioner from June 2003 to March 2006, has some novel ideas to bring in a change this Dasara.

Speaking to Star of Mysore on Tuesday, Ibrahim said that he plans to spruce up the decoration and improve the aesthetic aspects by inviting suggestions and creative ideas from the public through advertisements in the newspapers. The suggestions, if found feasible, will be discussed with the officials concerned and finalised by the sub-committee.

Ibrahim said that already, one round of talks are over. There are also plans to give rewards for good suggestions from individuals or organisations and institutions.

This year, the mantra is to save electricity consumption without hampering the usual illumination of Palace, buildings, road junctions and along the Jumboo Savari route, which will be designed based on the traditional and heritage concept.

When pointed out that the glamour of Dasara is seen only on the main roads and circles, Ibrahim conceded and added that many suggestions had been put forth in this regard too. Hence, the industrialists, business establishments and private building owners will be urged to join in the celebration by decorating their infrastructure in keeping with the heritage of the city.

To a question about public private partnership (PPP) for decorating and illuminating the important circles in city, as had been done in the past years, Ibrahim said that private sponsors will be facilitated to decorate certain circles in the city. But it has not yet been decided as to which circle will be given to whom, he said.

The MD said that an exhibition will be organised by the City Corporation from day-one of the Dasara exhibition where information will be given to the public about saving electricity, using non-conventional sources of power like solar, wind and bio-gas energies. The best stalls will be given awards and provided with assistance of the marketing network for their products.
