In a tragic incident, a 23-year-old bike rider was killed on the spot after his motorbike was knocked down and run over by a KSRTC bus near Sub-urban Bus Stand on Bangalore-Nilgiri road in city yesterday evening.

The unfortunate victim of the tragedy has been identified as Keshav, son of Chennashetty, a resident of Kollangadahalli in Kanakpura taluk and a tarpaulin vendor by profession.

It is reported that Keshav, riding his Suzuki Samurai bike (KA-17, K-5370), reportedly tried to avoid helmet-checking by traffic cops near the Arch Gate in front of Sub-urban Bus Stand and was mowed down by a KSRTC Rajahamsa bus (KA-19, F-2257) attached to Bangalore Depot coming from Five Lights Circle to the bus stand.

Irked by the youth's death, hundreds of citizens accompanied by activists of SDPI, staged a flash stir at the spot alleging that unscientific and insensitive helmet-checking by Police was the cause of the accident and Police had to resort to mild lathi charge to disperse the angry mob. The protest led to disruption of traffic for sometime on the busy road.

It may be recalled that some two wheeler-riders who had tried to avoid the unscientific checking by traffic cops had met with accidents, some of them fatal.

Meanwhile, DCP M.M. Mahadevaiah who reached the spot, said that the bike rider died as the bus ran over him from behind and added that the absconding bus driver will be nabbed soon.

Relatives of the deceased Keshav, who was living at a rented house near Jaganmohan Palace in city, rushed to the MMC&RI Mortuary where the body had been kept for postmortem.
